32,000 Meals Served this Ramadan!

What a busy, busy month of Ramadan! Every day, Family Kitchen volunteers were on the job, collecting and distributing excess food from hotels, restaurants and bakeries and together they reached an astonishing 32,000 meals!!

Much of the food came from 5-star establishments and was delivered to needy people in places such as Madaba, Jabal Nuzha, Al Manara, Schneller Camp, Hay Nazzal and Mubes.

Huge amounts of food often get thrown out during Ramadan. After one particular 5-star party we found that the meat of 9 sheep was left over! It was great to be able to save it from the trash and give it to people in need.

On average the amount of food saved this month by Family Kitchen was 1,000 meals per day.

Family Kitchen is run entirely by enthusiastic volunteers – about 150 of them this year! The logistics and strategy require detailed planning and coordination, not only for the smooth collection and safe delivery of the food, but also to keep the hygienic standards high and ensure that the 450-some containers in use are kept spotless. With 45-50 people helping every day, they totaled over 10,000 man-hours of volunteering efforts in this one month.
